Customer Service = Employee Morale

Today I went into a grocery store for a couple of items and I came out with steam coming out of my ears. Why? Why did something so simple turn into a complete nightmare!
It took me almost half an hour to get out. I had one person in front of me. She had a problem with her payment and the cashier had to go off and get the manager. Others left the aisle and went to other cashiers because she took SO LONG! I was at the point where I was pointing my stuff back into the buggy to go to another lane when the manager finally came and took care of the problem. I fused and complained but I got nothing = no apology or anything. The manager just walked off with a sneer on her face and the cashier said nothing.
What the heck is the matter??? It was a holiday and both the cashier and the manager looked like they were out of it. They hated their job and hated being there. Why is that my fault? Why do I have to suffer because you are miserable and can't get out of your job??
These days you can go into a store and end up coming out extremely aggravated because an employee with a bad attitude makes you see red. Many businesses are resorting to machines rather than having cashiers because of this. Fast food places have at least 2 or 3 machines to take your order. All of this because they can't hire people that have a good attitude.
It's a sad sign of the times. Many have given up and resort to ordering on-line and having things delivered to their door. They don't want to deal with the ATTITUDES any more. And can you blame them? Heck NO!
It's a new year and I wonder if things will get better or get worse. We will have to see.
Take care,
LK
